THE DANGERS OF SUNLIGHT

Sunlight produces large amounts of radiation, known as ultra violet light, which is made up of small particles called photons. Much of this is harmless to the eye, but high-energy photons are extremely hazardous. This high-energy radiation is split into three bands: UVA, UVB and UVC. By wearing sunglasses we can block out these harmful rays and give our eyes the protection they need. This is because the lenses have UV absorbers built in during the manufacturing process.

This high-energy radiation is split into three bands: UVA, UVB and UVC.

UVA Rays tan you skin and speed up the ageing process. Lengthy exposure to this radiation can harm our eyes causing age related illness such as cataracts.

UVB Rays cause sunburn and can quickly damage our eyes.

UVC Rays are extremely short and dangerous wavelengths that do not penetrate the Earth’s atmosphere.

The UV Index

The UV index has been developed to provide accurate regional forecasting of UV levels. Based on climatic conditions, time of the day and geographic location, the amount of UV is rated by an index of 1 (low) up to 15 (high). The UV Index is intended to increase consumer awareness of the dangers of UV radiation and is often featured in weather forecasts during the summer months. All our sunglasses totally block out UVA and UVB radiation.
